The City of Arcata is seeking community input in anticipation of a call to artists for public downtown art efforts!
The City of Arcata has established goals to encourage community beautification and increase art in public spaces. Through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), the City Council has set aside funds to beautify the G and H Street corridor connecting Cal Poly Humboldt to the Plaza. Public art is a proven tool to brighten areas, add culture to residents’ day-to-day, deter graffiti, strengthen collective community identity and make people smile.
In service of these outcomes, part of the ARPA funding for the G and H corridor will be used to commission local artists to paint fire hydrants and possibly crosswalks. The City is proposing a theme of connectivity to inspire design concepts. Before putting out a call to artists, the City is asking for input on what community members want to see!
Take the short survey at tinyurl.com/ArcataArts. The survey will be available until Friday, March 10.
This initial downtown public art effort will help set the stage for future calls to artists that will include broader ranges and mediums of public art. The City’s long-term aim is to continue implementing Arcata’s Strategic Arts Plan and making way for new public art in Arcata.
