2025 Call for Artists

The City of Arcata is excited to offer its third annual Call for Artists in collaboration with Playhouse Arts. This year the Call seeks to fund fire hydrant murals within the Sunny Brae neighborhood and one to two open-ended submissions which could include live art/performance happenings. The City welcomes individuals and collaborative teams to submit proposals for arts and culture creations. These creations will follow a theme of “Seasons and Stories” where artists will use their medium to share a story with the community. 

Artists will receive a stipend of $800 per fire hydrant and will be responsible for purchasing their own materials. A high quality, oil-based paint for metal is strongly encouraged. The City will provide and complete the clear-coat necessary to protect the art.  Murals will be implemented in April/May 2026. 

Interested artists will be required to complete an application, which can be found here.  Applications are due January 30, 2026.

Proposals will be selected by a local Arts & Culture Panel and guided by Arcata’s Strategic Arts Plan. The City of Arcata Strategic Arts Plan consists of the following core elements: Arcata’s arts are highly valued, Arcata’s artists are fairly compensated for the work they do, and Arcata’s arts and cultural life is equitable and accessible to all. 

Humboldt County residents and emerging artists will be prioritized during proposal review.

Convocatoria para artistas 2025

La Ciudad de Arcata se complace en presentar su tercera convocatoria anual de artistas en colaboración con Playhouse Arts. Este año, la convocatoria busca financiar murales en hidrantes contra incendios en el vecindario Sunny Brae y una o dos propuestas abiertas, que podrían incluir intervenciones artísticas en vivo o presentaciones escénicas. La Ciudad invita a individuos y equipos colaborativos a presentar propuestas para creaciones artísticas y culturales. Estas creaciones seguirán el tema “Estaciones e Historias”, donde los artistas utilizarán su medio artístico  para compartir una historia con la comunidad.

Los artistas recibirán un estipendio de $800 por cada obra para hidrante contra incendios y serán responsables de adquirir sus propios materiales. Se recomienda encarecidamente el uso de pintura de alta calidad a base de aceite para metal. La ciudad proporcionará y aplicará la capa protectora transparente necesaria para preservar el arte. Los murales se implementarán en abril / mayo de 2026.

Los artistas interesados deberán completar una solicitud, disponible aquí. Las solicitudes deben presentarse antes del 30 de enero de 2026. Las propuestas serán seleccionadas por un panel local de arte y cultura, guiado por el Plan Estratégico de Artes de Arcata. Este plan se basa en los siguientes principios fundamentales:

  • Las artes en Arcata son altamente valoradas.
  • Los artistas de Arcata reciben una compensación justa por su trabajo.
  • La vida artística y cultural de Arcata es equitativa y accesible para todos.

Se dará prioridad a residentes del Condado de Humboldt y a artistas emergentes durante la revisión de propuestas.
