Forest Timber Harvest
The City has contracted with Licensed Timber Operator Diamond R. Ranch for this project, and for safety  purposes, all Community Forest visitors are urged to comply with all trail closures and detour signs while the harvest is active. Posted trail and road closures will be effective from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and recreational users must take alternate routes.

Anticipated trail closures will include trail numbers 9, 3 and a short section of trail 1. The Fickle Hill Road  trailhead and the parking area on Fickle Hill Road will also be periodically closed to public access and vehicle parking. When the Fickle Hill parking area is closed, forest visitors are encouraged to access the forest from other entry points, such as Redwood Park at East 14th Street, Bayview Street, East Park Road, East 11th Street, Diamond Drive, Humboldt State University at Granite Avenue, or at West End Road. Trails in the Sunnybrae Forest Tract of the Arcata Community Forest are also available as an alternative.

The harvest is expected to last through the month of August and may continue into early September, and work  will take place Monday through Friday. City Environmental Services staff will be on hand to answer questions  from the public while the work is taking place and to maintain public safety. When approaching city staff with  questions, forest visitors are advised to wear facial coverings and practice physical distancing.

The Arcata Community Forest is managed with a balanced approach composed of working forest areas, special  management areas and ecological reserves. This second-growth redwood forest offers many recreational  opportunities for hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians and other nature lovers to enjoy. Timber harvest revenue helps fund forest operations, habitat restoration and management of the forest’s recreational use.
The project is scheduled to be completed by early September. For more information or for trail closure and condition updates, call the City of Arcata at (707)822-8184.

On days of scheduled work, access to Bayside Rd, Chester Ave and Beverly Dr may be temporarily interrupted or detoured. Additionally, residents may experience extended delays exiting driveways during grinding and paving. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
