[ARCHIVED] City to Plant Over 100 Trees and Shrubs Around Arcata

Parks Crew Plants Red Bowhall Maple

City to Plant Over 100 Trees around Arcata During February and March

The City of Arcata’s Parks Crew will plant 115 urban street trees and shrubs throughout Arcata in City parks and various roadside locations during the months of February and March, thanks to funds provided by PG&E. The City is working collaboratively with PG&E to replace trees that the utility company will be removing as part of gas line safety work in Arcata.

As part of this significant urban forestry project, western red cedar, vine, Bowhall and big leaf maple, and red flowering currant will be planted from the Valley West neighborhood in the north, to the Arcata Community Park and Sports Complex and the Windsong neighborhood in the south.

Urban trees sequester carbon. A big leaf maple planted in Arcata’s urban setting can store 2,200 pounds of carbon dioxide over a 20 year period.

“Trees contribute to clean air and water, which provides for an overall healthier community,” says Arcata Environmental Services Deputy Director Julie Neander. “The presence of trees in parks and neighborhoods can also help reduce stress and promote a feeling of well-being.”
