Responsibilities

The Board of Appeals convenes to hear and decide appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the building official relative to the application and interpretation of the California Building Code. The board consists of members who are qualified by experience and training to assess matters pertaining to building construction and who are not employees of the City of Arcata. They have no authority to interpret administrative provisions of the California Building Code.

Meetings are held as necessary at the call of the Secretary.

About the Board

The Boards of Appeals was established in 1966 by the adoption of Ordinance No. 586, it was redefined in 1999 by the adoption of Ordinance No. 1292 and was further redefined in 2025 by the adoption of Ordinance No. 1577. The Board's primary function is to hear and act upon appeals and decisions made by the Building Official. The Board of Appeals has powers and duties are outlined in Arcata Municipal Code sections 2223 – 2226.
